Gas Furnace Not Heating? Try These Troubleshooting Steps

When your gas furnace stops heating, it can be frustrating, especially during the colder months. However, many common issues can be resolved quickly without the need for professional help. Try these troubleshooting steps before reaching out for assistance:

Step 1: Check the Thermostat Settings

  • Ensure the system switch is set to HEAT or AUTO.
  • Verify that the temperature is set above the current room temperature.
  • Set the fan to ON for continuous airflow, or AUTO if you prefer the blower to operate only while the furnace is running.

Step 2: Raise the Thermostat

  • Try turning the thermostat to the highest temperature to see if the furnace starts.

Step 3: Inspect the Air Filter

  • If the airflow feels weak, check the air filter. A dirty filter can block airflow, so replace it if necessary.

Step 4: Ensure All Vents Are Open

  • Make sure all air vents (registers) are open and not obstructed by furniture or other items.

Step 5: Check the Power Switch

  • Locate the power disconnect switch near the furnace and ensure it’s turned on.

Step 6: Inspect the Circuit Breaker

  • Check the fuse or breaker in the electrical panel to ensure it hasn’t tripped.

Step 7: Check the Gas Valve

  • Make sure the gas control valve to the furnace is open.

Step 8: Check the Pilot Light

  • For furnaces with a pilot light, ensure it’s lit. For electronic ignition systems, confirm that it’s functioning properly.
