Air Conditioner Not Cooling? Try These Troubleshooting Steps

When your air conditioner stops cooling, it can be frustrating, especially on those hot Florida days. But don’t worry—most of the time, it’s a minor issue that can be resolved quickly. Before reaching out for professional help, try these simple troubleshooting steps to see if you can fix the problem on your own.

Step 1: Check the Thermostat Settings

  • Make sure the system is set to COOL or AUTO.
  • Ensure the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature.
  • Set the fan to ON for continuous airflow or AUTO for operation only when cooling.

Step 2: Lower the Thermostat

  • Set the thermostat to the lowest temperature to see if the air conditioner starts.

Step 3: Inspect the Air Filter

  • If airflow is weak, check the air filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, so replace it if necessary.

Step 4: Ensure All Vents Are Open

  • Check that all air vents (registers) are fully open and not blocked by furniture or other items.

Step 5: Check the Power Switches

  • Locate the power disconnect switches near both the indoor and outdoor units and confirm they are turned on.

Step 6: Inspect the Circuit Breaker

  • Check the breaker or fuse in the electrical panel for both the indoor and outdoor units to make sure they haven’t tripped.
