Heat Pump Not Heating? Try These Troubleshooting Steps

When your heat pump isn’t providing heat, it can be pretty inconvenient, especially during colder months. But don’t worry, the solution might be simpler than you imagine! Here are some simple troubleshooting steps you can try before calling for professional assistance.

Step 1: Check the Thermostat Settings

  • Ensure the system switch is set to HEAT or AUTO.
  • Make sure the temperature is set above the current room temperature.
  • Set the fan to ON for continuous airflow or AUTO if you want the blower to operate only when the heat pump is running.

Step 2: Raise the Thermostat

  • Turn the thermostat to the highest temperature setting to see if the heat pump starts.

Step 3: Inspect the Air Filter

  • If airflow seems weak, check the air filter. A clogged filter can block airflow, so replace it if necessary.

Step 4: Ensure All Vents Are Open

  • Check that all air vents (registers) are fully open and free from obstructions.

Step 5: Check the Power Switches

  • Locate and confirm that the power disconnect switches for both the indoor and outdoor units are turned on.

Step 6: Inspect the Circuit Breaker

  • Check the fuse or breaker at the electrical panel for both the indoor and outdoor units to ensure nothing has tripped.
